Global automotive conglomerate Stellantis has unveiled its STLA Medium Platform for its incoming electric vehicle lineup. The Amsterdam-based automaker outlined its Dare Forward 2030 strategy in 2022 with plans to introduce four new platforms – STLA Small, STLA Medium, STLA Large, and STLA Frame – to support its electrification strategy.
In its latest press release, Stellantis announced that EVs underpinned by the STLA Medium architecture will start arriving in Europe near the end of 2023, with other markets soon following. The automaker plans to build up to two million vehicles yearly on the STLA Medium platform to capture the C and D market segments, accounting for 35 million cars sold globally in 2022.
“The STLA Medium platform demonstrates the power of the global Stellantis technical community, delivering products that are hyper-focused on our customers and rewriting long-held assumptions of transportation as we drive for carbon net zero by 2038,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis CEO.
Modular Capabilities
The Stellantis STLA Medium platform is a modular architecture for single and dual-motor electric cars, crossovers, and SUVs with front, rear, or all-wheel drive. It enables wheelbases ranging from 106 to 114 inches (2,700 to 2,900 mm), a vehicle length of 169 to 192 inches (4.3 to 4.9 meters), and up to 8.6-inches (220 mm) of ground clearance to support off-road applications.
The 400-volt STLA Medium platform accommodates two different-sized battery packs: the Standard Pack (up to 310 miles of range under the WLTP cycle) and the Performance Pack. The latter is a 98 kWh battery that delivers a WLTP-rated driving range of 435 miles and under 14 kWh per 100 km of energy consumption. Stellantis is not ready to talk about performance numbers, but it did reveal up to 382 horsepower for the most potent dual-motor variant.
Future-Proof Architecture
The STLA Medium’s 400-volt electrical architecture enables 20 to 80 percent DC fast charging in under 30 minutes. Stellantis promises all STLA platforms are compatible with future battery chemistries, including nickel and cobalt-free power packs, solid-state batteries, and lithium-sulfur. “What we see today is the product of just over two years of no-compromise innovation to deliver clean, safe, and affordable mobility, supported by our €30 billion investment in electrification and software through 2025,” Tavares added.
Stellantis remains tight-lipped on the first EV to feature its STLA Medium platform. However, sources claim the all-electric DS4 will launch at European dealerships in 2024, making it the first EV to have STLA Medium underpinnings. Stellantis has 16 vehicle brands, including Ram, Jeep, Mopar, Fiat, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, and Citroen.
