German automaker BMW has debuted the ninth-generation 5 Series sport-luxury sedan with a few surprises. First, the lineup has expanded with a gasoline, hybrid, and an all-electric i5 variant in a single or dual-motor configuration. Moreover, the 5 Series family has grown marginally to offer more room, and the new interior now offers more features befitting the nameplate.
BMW i5 AirConsole: In-Car Gaming For All
The 2024 BMW i5 is not the first production EV to receive an in-cabin gaming console. Whereas Tesla’s Arcade feature necessitates using the steering wheel buttons or a separate controller to play games, BMW’s AirConsole only requires a smartphone. Furthermore, all passengers can join the fun and play in competition mode using the i5’s standard 14.9-inch infotainment screen.
The library of available BMW AirConsole games includes Overcooked, Music Guess, Go Kart Go, Galazo, and many more. In addition, about 15 racing, quiz, music, and sports games are available, and BMW promises to add more to its AirConsole gaming library via over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Exterior Gaming Wrap
Commemorating the all-new BMW i5’s gaming intent is a custom-wrapped car with a pixelated design inspired by the eight-bit era of computer gaming. Unfortunately, BMW has not clarified if the unique body wrap is available to potential i5 buyers. Still, the AirConsole feature comes standard in the base i5 eDrive40 (about $68,000, including destination) and the range-topping i5 M60 xDrive ($85,000).
