Nissan will offer Safety Shield 360, a suite of six active safety technologies, as standard equipment on 10 models beginning in 2021. Nissan currently offers Safety Shield 360 as standard equipment on the 2020 Sentra, Leaf, Maxima, Kicks, Rogue Sport, and Titan. Among the first 2021 models to receive Safety Shield 360 is the newly-redesigned 2021 Rogue. According to Nissan, three additional models will follow for a total of 10.
Nissan made the announcement in accordance with National Teen Driver Safety Week. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among teens aged 16 to 19 than among any other age group; the risk is exceptionally high during the first months of having a license.
“Offering these safety technologies as standard equipment on 10 of our most popular models is an important step forward,” said Andy Christensen, senior manager and lead technology expert of Intelligent Transportation System Research, Nissan Technical Center North America. “This added layer of protection can help keep young drivers safe, especially as they are getting used to being on busy roads.”
Nissan Safety Shield 360 Features
Nissan Safety Shield 360 includes six different ADAS technologies.
Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection: Uses forward-facing radar and camera technology to track vehicles and pedestrians, can give audible and visual warnings and apply braking to help avoid or reduce the severity of frontal collisions. However, the driver should still remain alert and attentive as the system is not a fully autonomous one.
Lane Departure Warning: Can alert the driver if they are drifting from the intended lane with a visual warning and audible or haptic signals. However, lane markings must be visible and able to be detected by the system.
High Beam Assist: Automatically switches to low beam headlights when it detects a vehicle ahead and turns the high beams back on when appropriate.
Blind Spot Warning: Helps detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot by notifying them via an illuminated light.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert: Can warn the driver about approaching vehicles when reversing out of a parking spot. In some situations, Nissan says this feature may not detect every approaching vehicle and are encouraging consumers to consult their owner’s manual.
Rear Automatic Braking: Helps detect stationary objects when backing up and, if necessary, applies the brakes to help avoid a collision. Like Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Rear Automatic Braking has some limitations, and Nissan encourages consumers to consult their owner’s manual.
